“Hygea’s name is based upon the work of the Greek goddess for both mental and physical health. The modern-day word ‘hygiene’ finds its foundation and definition from her name.”
About HYGEA… Canadian medical research company, which develops diagnostic test kits, treatments and preventive methods for the management of infectious & cell based disease in the animal and agriculture markets.
With research roots to 1995, Hygea’s scientific team evolved a multiple use test kit platform which was then patented in several regions, such as Canada, United States, Mexico, China, Japan, Australia and India.
Hygea identifies market needs and opportunities and then using its depth of in-house and contracted services develops practical solutions:
cost efficient rapid diagnostic screening systems for infectious diseases and/or infections, with real-time, point of care detection for the animal and agriculture markets
“Discovery consists of seeing what everybody has seen and thinking what nobody has thought.”
—Albert Szent-Gyorgyi, Hungarian-born biochemist (1893 - 1986)
Throughout his years as an American medical missionary in the Ivory Coast, Dr. Charles Beal’s research followed this philosophy and became the foundation for Hygea’s creation and evolution —
“to continue to think what nobody has thought”
The Technology and its Benefits
“Brings the Lab to the Animal” for Veterinarians
Use of advanced molecular technology that brings Gold Standard infectious disease results to Point of Care, Pen Side.
Over the past 4 years, Hygea Life Sciences has been working with McMaster University in the development of a point of care test for swine flu. The approach is unique in that it solves the problem of not having to use test tubes or mixing samples in open air, within the direct animal environment.
Results to be available in under 1 hour with a goal to reach 30 minutes, thus reducing the time delay waiting for lab specific testing platforms.
Testing results continue to be highly promising. Prototype design for the hand held electronic testing device is well in progress under the guidance of our chief engineer, Terry Brain.
The testing mechanism has many extensions for application across the animal sector and for specific test development applications, has evolved to meet the needs of the Canadian Agriculture Sector.
